We are in the time of the year where we are consistently switching out decorations for new holidays. Spiders and pumpkins make their appearance for Halloween, then it is a quick switch over to Thanksgiving decorations for a month, before breaking out the tree and decorating for Christmas! There are so many other holidays in this three month span, from Diwali to Hanukkah and more! When do you start decorating for your favorite holiday?
With these holidays so close together, decorating can become a cumbersome task. Use these tips to stay organized and make the decorating more enjoyable!
Use totes instead of boxes. Have you ever had water in your basement? Most of us keep our decorations in our storage areas, which are usually in the basement or in the garage. Plastic totes (assuming they are not cracked) will protect your decorations from moisture and any little critters.
Be purposeful with colors. There are so many totes in so many colors that it makes this an easy task. Use orange totes with black lids for Halloween, brown totes with yellow lids for Thanksgiving, and red totes with green lids for Christmas. When your totes are color coded, it is much easier to organize the holidays together, and pull out the ones that you need without having to dig through each tote or try to read the hand writing (that ultimately will be on the wrong side of the tote so you can’t find it). Color coded totes are sometimes on sale AFTER a holiday has ended, so plan to pick these up this year and have them for years to come!
Use multiples. Finding the biggest tote to hold ALL of your holiday decorations may not be the best idea. Instead, choose a manageable size that you can lift and carry when full. This may mean instead of one giant Christmas tote you will have four, but that is okay! This will also help your organization. Use one tote only for lights or outdoor decorations. One for your throws and holiday blankets. One for your ornaments. This will make the task less daunting when you go to decorate. For example, once you have your tree up and want to add ornaments, you can easily carry your ornament tote up the stairs and to the tree, and you won’t have to dig around other decorations.
Have some fun. Decorating is supposed to be fun! Turn on some spooky music for Halloween or carols for Christmas and sing along while you decorate!
Involve your family. Decorating can be a date night or family night. When everyone plays a part they will feel included – plus it will add to the fun!
P.S. those totes are perfect for moving. Okay, we are a moving company – so we have to add in this perk! These color coded totes are manageable and already packed. This will be a simple thing for your movers to move.
