Once you’ve completed your move you may find yourself under a pile of moving boxes. What should you do with these?
First, it is good to know that, cardboard is very easy to recycle. In fact, turning old cardboard into new cardboard takes about 75% of the energy required to create new cardboard from raw materials. What’s more, recycling cardboard emits about 50% less sulfur dioxide than what it takes to manufacture new cardboard.
Okay, we know that recycling our cardboard is important, but how should we go about it?
After you have completed a move with Mulder’s Moving and Storage, we recommend that you break down all of the boxes, removing all of the tape so that they lay flat. You will want two piles: one for boxes in good condition that can be used again, and one for damaged boxes.
Next, drop your reusable boxes off at Mulder’s Moving and Storage. Your good boxes will be reused by another customer. We offer our local customers free packing material when it is available.
You will need to take your damaged boxes to a recycling center for the material to be recycled. If you have recycling pick up, you may be able to stick your boxes out for retrieval. We recommend that you call your recycling pick up to be sure that this is an option for you.
Here are some tips for preparing those boxes:
- Keep them dry. Store your boxes in a dry place until you can drop them off at our office location.
- Keep them clean. If other customers are to reuse the boxes, we want to be sure that they are clean and free of food debris, oil, or other substances. Same goes for those damaged boxes that will be recycled. Recycling centers accept clean boxes.
- Remove all tape. Please be sure all tape is removed before recycling your boxes.
